Trucks for trailers of normal size is way overkill. You can get normal cars in europe rated to pull 1500-1600kg easy

Ford Fusion V6 FWD should have a tow rating of about 2000 pounds.

That looks like a small speed boat but combined with the trailer, I’d guess they’re over the mark and pushing their luck.

Haha, should be a tow rating around 2000 pounds. I’d say it’s a small boat but combined, he’s pushing his luck. I’d say a little over 2k pounds on a flat short distance tow wouldn’t be a big deal at all, but combine that with the boat ramp and pulling it out would be TOUGH

I suppose they could live near the ramp, and just use the car to drive down the street and launch it.

Suspension can handle a beating (I think I’ve proven that one!) but I’d be horrified of the implications to the trans.

This is the trans that was split developed by GM/Ford because this is a 2010-2012 Fusion and it’s NOT the Sport, which would have had a 3.5L V6 so it’s rocking the same 3.0 I have, but a different trans.

I trust my Mazda designed transmission more than one Ford had it’s hands in.

In my opinion Ford transmissions went downhill when they stopped being a C with a number after it. (Montego is a C4)

Towing rules/regulations regarding maximum tongue weight and maximum speeds are different in Europe. Because of lower tongue weights and lower speeds, a car’s tow rating can be much higher over there. The trailer setup is different in the U.S.

I mean that wouldn’t be much of a problem especially if they took it real nice and easy with the go pedal. My concern is the pull out of the water though. That actual pull up the boat ramp is going to be more than just the weight of the boat but the weight of getting it OUT of something.

Speaking as someone who owns at 2012 Fusion (2.5 though), that transmission is shit. I absolutely hate it. The rough gear changes, the unwillingness to change gears, the gearing itself. All terrible. And Ford just says “Oh, that’s just how that transmission works.” They offer a TCM update, but you have to pay like $300 or something for it, and it doesn’t really fix it much. I’m ready to dump that car as soon as I can get some money together for something else (aka Mazda5 for the wife, since she’s the one driving the Fusion).

Yeah that’s the same trans this one towing a boat is using.

If you’re concerned about transmissions a Mazda5 might be the best answer. I don’t know how smooth it is, but make sure the recall has been handled on it. They added a heat shield and new software. It’s also only a 5 speed auto attached to a 2.5L I-4. They also discontinued for 2016, dunno if you’re looking new.

It’s not just the speed, it’s the maximum tongue weight on the trailer. Europe has much lower tongue weights, so the expected load on the hitch (and rear suspension of the car) is much lower over there. The allowable tongue weight affects the trailer setup. If you wanted to tow the same boat with the same trailer over there, the trailer axle would have to be moved forward to reduce the tongue weight.

Kinja'd!!! Rustholes-Are-Weight-Reduction > TheRealBicycleBuck
09/20/2016 at 11:26

Kinja'd!!!2

Now that you said it, the axle is way in the back!
Typically, our trailers have their axles in the middle:

Kinja'd!!!

The trailer hitch on the Pajero is rated at 75 kg, which seems ridiculous if you think about it.

Kinja'd!!! shop-teacher > Rustholes-Are-Weight-Reduction
09/20/2016 at 11:32

Kinja'd!!!1

Yep, the axles are the real issue. Because you guys tow slower, you can have those axles right in the middle and maintain stability. American trailers have their axles further back, so they can maintain stability at higher speeds. Thus necessitating bigger vehicles to pull the same weight.

No, both approaches are “I’ll structure regulations so most people can tow with their own vehicles”.

In Europe, that means aiming for towing with small cars, which in turn means lowering the tongue weight, which means they must travel at a lower speed than other traffic.

In NA, that was a target consisting largely of large, heavy BOF cars, trucks and vans. As the BOF cars and wagons have disappeared, more people have bought trucks, so it evens out. With heavier duty (and just plain heavier) vehicles, that means both the tongue weight and the overall trailer weight can increase. Alternately, the same load can be towed at a much greater speed without getting close to the danger zone.

HammerheadFistpunch please step in and correct me if my summary of your post is incorrect.

It’s not so much a concern as it is a nuisance. It’s not broken, it works the way the dealership says it’s supposed to work, t just doesn’t work the way I want it work, if that makes any sense, lol. But we’re in the process of trying to buy a house right now, so we’re stringing the Fusion along until after that.

We might just end up financing it in my dad’s name just to avoid any issues with loan rates due to the whole home buying thing. I dunno. And no, we weren’t looking new. We’re looking at a few years old. The Fusion is a 2012, so at least that year or a year two newer. Hopefully that way we can keep the payment just about the same.

Cool. The only reason I ask is, Stingray tends to be kind of an entry-level boat, not the bottom of the market but nothing terribly special. But then the engines/outdrives are all the same so it’s really about interior materials/finish and exterior design, a lot of which is taste. What do you have now? Or you can tell me to shut up! I just like talking about boats after working at a marina for a long time.

Just got our first boat this past spring. 1976 Lund Shellstar 15 with a 70 Johnson. Picked it up cheap. It runs, floats, and is dead simple to work on which is nice. But it can be a cantankerous, grumpy engine. Old 2-strokes are prone to that I guess. For a 40 y.o. boat, it is in pretty decent shape.

It gets us out on the water. We can break things, hit things, mess them up without really losing a ton of money on the boat.

We aren’t looking for anything crazy for our next boat. Just something around 20' that has a place to sleep and a place to lay out in the sun.

I completely understand your feelings on the trans. There’s a large number of transmissions that are “working fine” but suck, a lot of them are behind Ford ovals. It’s one of the reasons I was happy to find my Milan’s Transmission was developed by Mazda -not Ford. And I’m one of the biggest Ford fans on here!

Makes sense, I always buy used. Drastically better deals. So much more car for your money.

Not obvious enough to a moron, I guess. My dad spent like three hours with the guy going over all the procedures of starting it, launching it, maintaining it, etc. Including how to mix the oil, how to measure the right amount (he even included the tool to do it, because his replacement boat had oil injection).

I remembered another detail. The guy lived on a small lake, so he was only planning to launch/retrieve the boat once a year. When he told my dad he was going to do that with his Escort, my dad stared at him stone-faced for about 30 seconds, then said, “I’ll launch the boat for you.”

I’ve looked at deck boats. I’m not sold on them. They don’t really have a place to sleep. We are thinking a small cuddy or pocket cruiser. Ideally we will be moving to the ocean soon and in that case, I’m looking at a walkaround - possibly a cat. The space for tanks aft, lay out on the bow, plus a place to get out of the sun. I think it would be a good fit.
